Does anyone have a theory on the town in the show?

I just finish season 1 and I have such a love/hate relationship with the characters and the show. I’ve been scrolling through this sub and seen some amazing theories that put some things in perspective but I haven’t seen anything on the town itself. Does anyone have some theories on the town like how is the town so modern (tv, phone, radio, electricity, soda machine etc) if no one can leave? Was it a normal town before it became what it was in the show? I would love anyone’s insights!
