Anyone have experience in a union?

My wife is a Steward for her workplace's union (IAM) here in NC. She has a federal job on a military base, if that matters.

I've met and become friends with alot of her fellow union members, and they all agree that we need to be unionized.

I'll be honest, i know almost nothing about becoming unionized, and since I'm one of the newer guys at my PEC, I'm still not super close to everyone I work with.

Is this a terrible idea, a good one, something I need to be super careful about, etc? Any advice etc would be helpful.
