So I'm interested in studying Freud...
Post Body

Hello, I am a total novice to Psychology and am interested in delving into Freudian philosophy and psychoanalysis. As I am also an English undergrad, my goal is mainly to better understand the origins of the psychoanalytic tradition with respect to Literary analysis/criticism. I've read that I ought to start with Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams, but am currently lost as to the specific book I should start with. I've considered the following:

Volume 54 of the Great Books of the Western World

This one seems to cover all of his major texts, but I couldn't find much information as to the nature of the translations and the presence (or absence) of helpful introductions and such.

The Basic Writings of Sigmund Freud (Psychopathology of Everyday Life, the Interpretation of Dreams, and Three Contributions To the Theory of Sex)

Found this one on Amazon for a good price. Although, I am once again unsure as to the quality of the translation due to a lack of information and am unsure if I should invest in such a weighty tome as a total beginner.

Interpretation of Dreams (Wordsworth Classics of World Literature) New ed Edition

Found this one on Amazon as well. And, while it's certainly less intimidating, I would appreciate different perspectives.

Is there any particular edition or publication of Freud that you would consider best for a beginner in the field ?

Would you recommend that a beginner start with a larger anthology or a smaller, more focused book ?

A related question:

Would you recommend any works of fiction (movies, books, T.V. shows or anime) that make use of Freudian philosophy / psychology as a major theme ?

I've watched Neon Genesis Evangelion (which is what inspired me to learn about Freud in the first place), but don't know of any others.

Thanks.
