Les Simpsons translation question
Post Body

I was watching 'Les Simpsons' and I noted that they translated the infamous 'you don't make friends with salad' chant as 'On se fait pas de potes à coup de salade.'

Two questions: What is the difference between 'un ami' and 'un (une?) pote'? How does "à coup' translate to "with"? Regarding the latter, the word 'coup' really messes with me as it seems it's used in tons of phrases with no one consistent meaning.
