Je reviens d'un voyage en France et en Belgique. J'ai réservé le voyage il ya six mois et j'ai décidé que je devais apprendre un peu de français. J'ai appris un peu de français quand j'étais au lycée, mais j'ai tout oublié. Maintenant, dans mes années 30, j'ai décidé de commencer par le début.

J'ai acheté un livre de grammaire et des podcasts. J'ai étudié pendant 1-2 heures par jour. Maintenant, je peux dire beaucoup de phrases. Pendant mon voyage, j'ai bavardé avec des gens du coin. Je suis devenu ami avec le propriétaire d'un restaurant de shawarma. Je n'ai pas tout compris, mais j'ai compris assez. Je me suis excusé à un barman français parce que j'ai parlé comme un touriste. Il m'a dit que beaucoup de parisiens parlent français mal.

I'm going to switch to English now, because I don't know how to say this in French. There were times when I would be walking by a group of native speakers, and I'd try to eavesdrop on them. Sadly, I found that I understood almost nothing. I could only understand people if they spoke slowly and I was watching their lips. As soon as someone realized I was a tourist, they either slowed down their French, or switched to near-flawless English. I would try to persevere in French, but that was often a losing battle.

One way that those living in a French-speaking country could help, is to post photos of billboards or advertisements in French. I found myself snapping photos with my phone and then translating them later to help learn some vocabulary. Ads tend to have a nice mix of slang and vocab. It would be a fun exercise.

Anyway, I'm happy to share the exact details of what worked for me if anyone is interested. Also, feel free to fix my French above, I'm sure it's flawed.
