How much would splitting decks break the game?
Post Body

My friends and I aren’t really concerned with balance, so I’d like to play with all the cards in with all the expansions and keep it relatively easy to set up. The only problem is the decks are quite large, and I’d like to keep the table readable (so I’d prefer not to leave half the deck lying somewhere when someone needs to put something on the bottom but it’s not the end of the world if this would happen).

A fun idea I thought up in the peculiar organ I call my brain, was to split the decks into two or more stacks and leave each open to interact with. This would apply to the treasure, loot, and monster decks. As for cards that have you scout the top of the decks, you could split the amount between the stacks (ex. If you have the blue map, you could look at the top card of one stack and three from the other). I think this would be a fun solution, even if it diverges off from the base rules quite a bit.

To those who are more familiar with all the interactions in this game, what immediately stands out to you as a fundamental issue with these house rules (any specific cards that could break?), and do you think they could be fixed?

TL;DR: I’m playing with all the cards and wanna know how screwed up the game would be if you can draw from multiple stacks.

I wanted to do something similar when I first got all the cards but there’s just too many issues that would arise, the game wasn’t really meant to be played like that like you mentioned, and would really hurt the flow of the game being that now you have two decks to choose from (like if Cain wanted to use his ability, there’s a lot of combinations but would really slow the game down). One of the things I value the most about four souls is the time it takes to play, which is relatively short, and I’d like to keep it that way as much as possible. So I would just spend the extra time and use the deck ratios.

That being said it’s your cards, your game, and your friends. If you wanna play it like that there’s nothing I can say or do to stop you lol, just try it and see how it goes, that’s part of the fun anyways.

TLDR: I recommend deck ratios but do what you want

Haha that’s awesome that you guys can appreciate that stuff. A lot of people I play with absolutely hate when things like that happen, I guess it just feels bad? My gaming groups have changed over the years, back in high school I honestly would’ve thought interactions like that were hilarious, but nowadays I think maybe my group is just a little too serious

It’s the decision making. It can be something as simple as using a card that lets me look at the top of the deck and having to pick between the two decks, or like I said Cains ability, if I use sleight of hand on deck one, then the next player has to either fight the deck that they rearranged or the one they didn’t. If they kill a monster and they need to replace with top deck the same thought process happens. It can also be kind of unfair and make certain items weaker/stronger without really meaning to. But for me it’s mostly the decision making, and it would be increased even further if you could split your ability between the two decks like you said, just a lot of fluff for not that big of a payoff. Like I said you’d probably save more time just using the deck ratios instead of coming across conflicts and having to take time to resolve them
