On what happened to Hober Mallow

This is tagged current but goes into speculation of next season.

Does Hober Mallow survive? Based on recent interviews with Goyer (particularly the Lorehounds one from a week ago), I got the impression that he becomes a much bigger character. Perhaps this is just a reference into his role into the final episode but I thought he would become like a fully fleshed Han Solo type in a future season.

I was surprised to see him toast to the end and then NOT see him in the vault. Maybe it becomes a season 3 reveal.
