Iāve been fostering a cat named Carrot who came to me in rough shapeāvery underweight, with little appetite, and no interest in play or grooming. Over the past few weeks, heās made incredible progress. Heās eating regularly, has gained a full pound in just one week, started engaging in play, grooming himself, and showing such a sweet, gentle personality.
Today, I got a call from the shelter saying they found blood in his urine and suspect itās been ongoing. Rather than pursuing further diagnostics, theyāve decided to euthanize him due to āresource limitations.ā This feels like an extreme measure, especially since Carrotās health and spirit have both been on the rise. Heās shown a real will to live, and I believe with the right treatment, he could continue his recovery.
Iām doing everything I can to fight this decision, but Iām not sure how best to proceed. I thought about reaching out to local rescues or even getting friends and family to appeal to the shelter on his behalf. I just donāt want to overstep or make things worse legally.
If anyone has experience with situations like this or advice on how to advocate for him effectively, Iād really appreciate it. Carrot deserves a chance at a full, happy life, and Iām determined to help him get it. Thank you so much for any guidance!
I would in a heartbeat if only my current cat got along with other cats
I offered to cover his ultrasound, which is the most I can afford right now, but they didnāt accept my offer
Is this a serious inquiry? Because if so then yes!
Thank you so much šš I just messaged you guys! Also I have reached out to the CRN, and unfortunately they said theyāve reached their intake limit
Thank you so much for your suggestion š as I mentioned in an update, they are actually one of the rescues I reached out to and they did in fact agree to take him on!! The main concern now is getting the current shelter to agree to the transfer
I completely understand what you mean, but I feel like at the very least, diagnostics should be ran before making such a drastic decision. For all we know, itās not that complicated of a situation.
And unfortunately I donāt have many connections in the rescue space. Iāve reached out to everyone I do know, and am praying for the best
I have one person interested in adopting him, but itās all so up in the air. He has a few days before his euthanasia appointment, but I think I can stop it if I can get him transferred to a different rescue thatās willing to take on his case, or if someone is willing to adopt and assume medical responsibility.
So yes he still has a chance!
(Iām in Ottawa, Ontario)
I kept them separated and used feliway. It also helped that carrot was on gabapentin. It wasnāt the perfect arrangement but I made it work for the limited time he was with us, and it was much better for carrot than the shelter
It could be real, but Iāve seen them allocate way more resources on other animals, and they definitely pull enough sponsors and investors to at least run diagnostics. They are not a small rescue by any means
In the meantime Iāve reached out to other local rescues asking for help, but the collective response is that the organization I work with is much larger and if the largest one canāt do it, neither can they š
Iām actually in Canada, and the organization I work with is the largest in the country.
I donāt think theyāre stretched too thin or anything like that, which is why Iām confused by their ālack of resourcesā reasoning. They deal with far more complicated cases on a daily basis, and have several large sponsors/investors.
As far as test results go, not much was shared with me. They said it could be a number of things but essentially they donāt care to find out
I think you are right on the mark. Iāll be posting an update soon addressing everything
Iāve posted an update on Carrot for those interested š
Thank you, I will! Heās actually only 3
Please check my update and read my bio! š„
I have posted an update! Itās good news š„°
Thank you for sharing that sweet story š I hope so too
Thatās a good idea about fb groups, I will do that, thank you! I wanted to call around and ask however since itās the weekend, the only vets open in my area are emergency clinics that charge crazy fees
Not yet, but hopefully in the afternoon weāll come to a decision of either transferring directly to the other rescue or if need be, I will adopt him myself and then take him there š
Edit: there is one now
Oh I would but unfortunately heās been staying at the shelter the last few days for testing š
Iām in Ottawa but am willing to travel any where within Ontario or Quebec š thank you for your offer

Believe me if I had just enough to adopt him and cover his bills, even if I was left with nothing, I would šš
