I had a solid friend group in highschool since elementary school. When school ended we all went our own ways. We still met a few times in the last years to catch up but are not close anymore.

Highschool ended 10 years ago. In the past couple of years I started having one or a few of my former friends appear in my dreams to get the plot going. None of my newer acquaintances appear in my dreams because we just aren't that close. So I guess whenever my dream worlds need characters they reach for the default ones I used to have.

It's a bit weird though because that makes me think about these people daily whereas they have all moved on.
