My wife and I pre-ordered our hybrid Maverick a while ago and have been loving it. The truck is the size we need and gets great gas mileage (wife averages about 43mpg!). That being said, all these recalls on it are giving her the spooks about it. Mostly the ones concerning the battery as it has left us stranded a few times:
- once while we were camping, the truck refused to turn on the next morning in a downpour; had to get a jump, we made it home, and then it died immediately once we turned it off. dealership took it in and fixed it.
- then again while we were visiting friends in the mountains in another state, it died in a parking garage. same issue as before: jumped it, made it home, dealership took it in for the fix.
- a few days ago, it just wouldn't turn on when she went to drive it to work. we made the decision to just not drive it cause we had an appt. with the dealership for the engine issue recall the same week and would mention it there.
- jumped it yesterday to take to the dealership, got the "check engine" light immediately, then halfway to the dealership (about a 20min distance from our house) the "service battery" light popped on and the truck just turned off. luckily, she was only going about 40mph down a quiet street that had a full breakdown lane. she coasted into the lane, pulled the emergency brake once she slowed, then had to jump the car to get it to the dealership. I had gone ahead and let them know what happened and they had the bay open and ready for her. they mentioned that the battery issues were a part of a new recall or customer program or something, so they would get everything squared away.
My wife is pretty antsy about her truck now. I am expecting our first child in March, and she is terrified of the truck just turning off again, but this time somewhere bad like on the highway or on a mountain road (since we do a lot of camping) or in a crowded downtown area (which we had just driven through right before it turned off on us). We've been left stranded enough times that she's wondering if these "fixes" are actually doing anything or just kicking the can down the road for future problems. Family has suggested looking into the lemon law, but all things considered it hasn't spent that much time at the dealership for fixes to warrant that. I keep telling her that we knew these issues would happen what with getting a brand new model of car during the COVID fiasco, but she's starting to wonder if her love of the car is worth our safety, especially our little nugget that's on the way.
Has anyone else had such bad luck in this regard? Any opinions on what to do? I suggested to her that worst case scenario maybe we could trade it in for a newer year model of the Maverick, but we would lose the customizations we made to this one and she's still not sure she would feel safe in one. Currently, she says that if the dealership called today saying the truck was fixed and ready to go home, she wouldn't feel safe driving it home and I just don't know what to do about that.
