Similarly how the titles says. I have a 2006 Ford Taurus with the Flex Fuel 6 Cylinder 3.0 liter engine.
I cannot for the life of me find a Power Steering Switch on the car. Have followed both Pressure Lines down to the rack, and looked at it from front top right and rear bottom right. There is also no electrical wires near the rack or going to the pressure line or pump. The pump itself also appears to be working because there is indeed pressure in the system. But when I first start the car, or am at idle there is no power assist to the steering, nor is the engine's rpms rising whenever I force the wheel to turn.
However, when I power cycle the car 4 to 5 times, and give the steering a hard right and a hard left while in reverse or drive the steering comes back almost instantly. And from then on it will be butter smooth, as if the steering shaft had snapped off the rack. On the other hand, when I achieve this, I lose it after driving straight on a road for at least 6 to 15 minutes. And then it is almost impossible to be get the power steering back until the next day.
No leaks, No fluid loss. Only a slight whine that goes away once the car enters idle after a cold start.
Any help would be appreciated, because the Ford Dealership I call keeps telling me there is a switch, but I have not been able to find it. If anyone else owns the same vehicle, and has changed this, I would appreciate a few pictures as to where such a switch is so that I can find it. Or if you've had a similar issue with the same car and can tell me how you fixed it, that would also be appreciated.
Edit: I would also like to add that I have replaced both the belt and belt tensioner, flushed and replaced the power steering fluid with Mercon V (Which helped tremendously), and replaced the cap to the Power Steering Pump because the old one was shooting fluid out of the tiny hole and never sat right. I have also repeatedly bled the system to no avail.
Edit 2: I would also like to add that even when throttling up to 2,000 rpm there is almost no assist either. Yet there is tons of pressure. It seems like a valve or switch is affecting the system, but I can't find a Switch and I would prefer not to disconnect hoses without knowing 100% that what I'd be taking off is the issue. But as mentioned with the power cycling of the car (Turning it off and on 4 times) and then turning the wheel, it feels like there is what I can only describe as "lumps" in the each rotation of the wheel that smooth out with each pass. Almost like air, but I am unsure.
