accidentally made my therapist listen to Johnny hobo today.
Post Body

I’m in EDMR/addiction therapy and in the session today, she wanted to try a slightly “flash” technique. In the original, it’s like you think of a positive image in your head and blink a few times on a certain cue while the therapist counts in five. (It’s meant to curb thought spiraling/dissociation and be grounding.) But today she’s like, “okay come up with a positive story from your life”. I could not think of one. So she’s like, “okay, well can you think of a favorite episode of a cartoon from your childhood? Something like that?” I had a completely blank look on my face probably bc then she says, “okay, is there a song you know all the lyrics to?” And I’m like yeah of course.

So we go with that, and this time she wants me to tap on my knees, alternating, and she’s gonna randomly call out the cue. I assumed that she’s just gonna have me go through the lyrics in my head, but then she asks me for the song title bc she’s gonna play it out loud and wants me to sing/mouth along. And “New Mexico song” is one of the only songs I confidently know 100% of the lyrics to. She starts playing it and I’ll say the technique worked bc I was so mortified that I made my therapist listen to it, I completely forgot about my tragic backstory shit in the process.
