“live the dream” really looks different after getting sober
Post Body

“Live the Dream” by Ramshackle Glory has been my favorite album for a couple years, to the degree that if I type “live the Dream” on my phone, the auto suggestion is “by Ramshackle Glory”. A few months ago, me and one of my coworkers were blowing off work by going through what our top ten albums were and justifying why, and it was like I could articulate pretty eloquently why I liked the first nine, but then I got to this one and I was just like “u can’t understand how much this means to me” while fighting back tears.

Anyway, I recently got sober and started going to AA meetings. I was in a meeting and someone speaking said the phrase “more about alcoholism”. In my little head I was like “oh that’s crazy, that’s the name of one of my favorite songs”. Come to find out that’s like the second chapter of the AA big book, which I did not realize until I started reading it 💀

Also very interesting to put that master playlist on Spotify on shuffle and go from listening to Johnny hobo to this album or “who are your friends gonna be” and see the difference on outlook of life in them

Now I’ve been listening to it a lot more recently and realizing how many little details I missed in the lyrics. Honestly that’s the whole post. I get that the concept of the album is about the first year of sobriety but now being in the first year, it hits different. I used to only cry if I was in an especially dark place and “never coming home” came on shuffle but I was on the train and “from here to utopia”, which is my favorite off that album, came on and that hit like a brick in the face.
