Proving there's always something new to learn....

Today I wasn't happy with my high F naturals on flute.
Too thin. Too airy. Not enough note. Poor tone really.
Mess with it. Still sucks.
Remember something I once heard Robert Dick say.
Something about how most flutists don't have the embouchure muscles to "extend the tube" or something like that.
Never did figure out what the Hell he meant by that?
What could he mean?

Fuck around for about a minute trying various wacky embouchures that I was inventing for the sake of trying.
Extend the tube man. Extend the tube. Whatever that means. Duckface?

Suddenly.

There it is.

That profoundly pure tone that's been eluding me for years.
I always had a edgier tone than most, which suits me fine.
But there it was. That pure -CLASSICAL- beauty. On every note. Even the high F natural.
Extend the tube indeed!!!
Used this new embouchure allll rehearsal at community band.

Bitchin.

This flute seems louder than ever. It's purer and cuts (and blends) better than my other tone. Which I still like. It's dark, edgy, great for the bottom octave. Great for unsettling music.

But this other. Ohhhhhhhhhh.

Only took me an additional 6 years after graduating from my university (and flute studio) to "get it."

:D

Always something to learn.
