A steady jet of water exposed to atmosphere is deflected through 45â—¦ by the cart as shown in the figure below. The incoming velocity of the jet as it hits the cart is in the horizontal direction. Neglect friction between the cart and the ground. There are no losses in the flow.
The diameters of the jet at entry and exit are identical at 40 mm. The approach velocity of the jet is 20 m/s. The cart is stationary. It is resting on wheels and is attached to a spring fixed to a wall. The spring constant value is k = 2 kN/m. The mass of the cart is 0.5 kg, the density of water is 1000 kg/m3 and g = 10 m/s2.
(a) Draw the proposed CV and identify/label each CS. Show the coordinate system used.
(b) Calculate the external force acting on the cart.
(c) Find the length by which the spring is compressed.
