Should the US replace income taxes with sales tax?

Post Body

I hate doing income taxes each year. I read one time about a proposal to replace income taxes with sales taxes and was intrigued. This is similar to other countries VAT or GST. Some points to note:

  1. Easy to implement (we already collect sales taxes now).

  2. Difficult to evade.

  3. Eliminate yearly income tax filing.

  4. Tax rates can be adjusted based on the goods. For example, food can have a low or zero tax while luxury goods have a higher tax. (This is already done in some places)

  5. Promotes savings.

  6. Promotes maintenance and repair instead of discarding.

What are your thoughts on why this would be a good or bad idea?
