Long post...
There's some Panthers' talk during the Final, of course, but not in depth as we'd get on our two local sports stations in Boston if in The Final. On the morning drive today, the hosts admitted they're not hockey exoerts. Ok, fine, but they're trying. Seems they have local or maybe national hockey analysts to help out during part of the show in The Final, as they do in Boston throughout the regular season for tumes when hockey is discussed on Boston's stations (not that much until playoffs).
BUT... what I noticed is no listeners call in with opinions/takes as would happen on any show in Boston! It's pretty much the entire point of the Boston local sports talk here, callers saying "he blows!, they suck!," along with hopefully making good and interesting points. I don't like the words " lsuck" and "blow," especially on the radio, but that's life in America nowadays, right?
Doesn't 560 AM ever have callers, especially for the other pro and college sports? It's stimulating and fun in Boston, usually, to listen to our local sports radio, even for football which I don't generally follow. But I'll even listen to some Patriots' talk and callers at times. Too much Patriots year-round talk, but that's what drives this market.
There's only one major sports radio station in Miami, unlike here in Boston?
On weekdays, we air local hosts and many popular and opinionated callers from 6 am until 11 pm or so, sometimes midnight, night schedules depending on the season. Weekends are also local talk, usually from 8 am or 9 am until 5 pm or so, save for any local afternoon Bruins, Celtics, Red Sox, Pats, some MLS Revolution games and weekend national college football or national NFL. Overnights are syndicated, never local unless Celtics in Finals, til 1 am after a game and til 6 am for the championship. One station went until 5 or 6 am in 2011 for the Bruins' Cup clincher taking calls.
We even have a dedicated hockey show in season on Saturdays at 9 am on the Bruins' station, 98.5 fm, with guests and callers. Same on WEEI 93.7 fm on Sundays at 8 or 9 am or so.
It seems such a waste in Miami, especially in the Final, to not have callers all day and early evening, especially to break up the monotony of the two hosts (and a female sidekick in the afternoon?).
Sure, it's a smaller and overall less passionate sports market than Boston, especially far fewer hockey fans, to even have a similar quality show in the Final or year-round as in Boston, but...
You guys don't know what you're missing in Miami vs. Boston, NY, Philadelphia, likely Detroit and Pittsburgh local sports radio. I even enjoy listening, especially overnights online, to WFAN 660 AM in NYC during Rangers playoffs as they do get some hockey talk and callers -- unlike the regular season with too much local competition for hockey.
