Vandy Film Review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzW7Ke4SNt4
So I'm a big believer in watching film to see who played well and where mistakes were made. During the game, there are 22 players on the field, and it's impossible to see what everyone is doing at one time. This leads to people making some in-the-moment emotional takes that, in hindsight, are untrue. So after watching over an hour of film here, I want to make a few notes and give my takeaways for what went wrong.
Run Game:
- Vandy had a game plan of selling out to stop the run. On the vast majority of plays, Vandy stacked the box with 7 to 9 players a snap. Unfortunately, our OL had one of their worst games, where they missed blocks or just got beaten. There weren't any holes for our RBs to hit, and I think Napier should have tried more jet sweeps, RB screens, or zero drop passes to take advantage of Vandy's aggressive stacking the box.
- I saw a lot of criticism of AR for not keeping the ball on read-options, but looking back, he actually was making the right reads. Go look at the plays at these minute marks (10:30, 12:10, 23:00, 30:00, 31:50, 35:10, 53:35). Out of 7 read-option plays, maybe one of them he should have kept. Vandy stacked the box and kept two players on the outside edge to contain Richardson.
- Vandy shut down the strength of the team, which is the run game, and Napier didn't seem to have an answer or make adjustments to it. We did try to throw it more, but the passing game also had some issues.....
Pass Game:
- Dropped balls. AR made 4 or 5 good to great throws that were simply dropped. Some of it were on players that don't get much playing time (Thai Bowman) and were in because of Henderson and Pearsall being out of the game. But some were on otherwise reliable players. Johnson, for example, dropped an easy pass in the first quarter where he would have walked into the endzone for a TD. Instead, we had to settle for a field goal.
- There were also just some poor play designs by Napier or just bad execution by receivers. The whole season we've seen AR roll out to the right just to face immediate pressure from a defensive player, forcing AR to make a quick decision. The roll-outs haven't worked all season, and Napier's stubbornness with it is quite perplexing. Another example was a mesh concept where the players poorly executed their routes, causing no separation.
- Generally, I gave AR a B in the Vandy game. His biggest weakness is his accuracy and ball placement. But against Vandy, he was a bit more accurate than normal, and his receivers let him down. Some of the criticism for AR doesn't make sense to me after watching film review. He can read defenses, and he goes through his progressions. If he could throw a ball more accurately, he'd be a great QB.
I hope our players leave the sloppiness to this game. I think our OL had an uncharacteristically bad game against Vandy and will play much better against FSU. If the receivers can also catch passes, then I like our chances against FSU. Anyways, have a great Thanksgiving everyone!
