How much Salt to Add, and Sourcing Salt?
Post Body

Zen recommends adding about 800 lbs of salt to their float tent. I have two questions:

  1. Iā€™ve only floated twice - once in a friendā€™s Zen Float Tent and once at a commercial place. My friend only put in 550 lbs, and said that the bouyancy was still adequate, but it had more ā€œgiveā€ which he liked than the first time he had used 800 lbs [he threw the first batch out, I forget why]. I went to sleep for 2 1/2 hours in the tent at this lower-than-recommended salinity concentration, and woke very refreshed (itā€™s what convinced me to get one). The other time I floated was at a commercial float place where I donā€™t really know what the salt concentration was.

Does anyone have experience with adding less salt to a tank than was recommended? Iā€™m inclined to try the 550 lbs since it worked so well, and I can always add more.

  1. Based upon my research so far, the cheapest way for me to get USP epsom salt is to buy it at Samā€™s Club (.68/ lb). The added advantage is that I can start low, in terms of the saline concentration, and get more without having to worry about shipping costs. Does anyone have any opinions on that, one way or the other, either in terms of cost, or if there could be a "quality" problem despite the fact that the Sam's Club Epsom salts is USP?
