Insulation/Protection and Sound Muffling for Zen Float Tent
Post Body

I got a used Zen Float Tent and I think all the hardware.

Idea. I thought of getting some rigid foam insulation (R5/inch) and constructing a shell for it, so setting it on a single 4’ x 8’ sheet, and getting a few more sheets to cut up into a snug enclosure for the tub and also the 3 sides of the tent except for the door. Cutting out little ports for the vents.

The person I bought it from had set it on a 4’ x 8’ sheet of the stuff. The foam board is amply rated to be able to take the weight - rated for 15 psi, whereas the maximum weight will be 75 lbs/ft2 which is around .5 psi.

I thought maybe lay some space blanket material between the foam board on the floor and the heating mats, to more thoroughly redirect heat up to water.

Benefits I would do this for:

  • Reduce heating costs
  • Muffle sound
  • Keep water warm during longer floats (I have slept in one up to 3 hours) when the pump/filter is turned off
  • Protect Tent from accidental puncture, etc.

Thicknesses come in 1, 1 1/2” or 2” foam board.

It’s a little more work to get the cuts straight on thicker board, but I figured if I’m going to that much trouble, might as well use the 2” board?

I need to figure something out for the door side of the tent. Wondering if I can devise some kind of “hinge,” maybe just made of duct tape, so I can have foam board door panel “hinge” open and close.

Any thoughts on this idea - good, bad, ugly or things to watch out for or reasons it wouldn’t work, or tips to make it work well?

1 thing I wondered about:

  • Would using space blanket material between the foam board and the heating pads screw that up - make it too hot or something?
