Screwed up on calculating box size for postage. Help!

Post Body

I'm shipping an item that weighs about 3 lbs, in a box that measures 16 x 12 x 12. It's going from the Midwest to California, and USPS says it'll cost $40 to go priority mail. Does that sound right? I know that dimensional weight comes into play here, but I had no idea I'd be so far off. I'd estimated about $20.

I'll pay that price if need be, but I want to be sure I'm not overlooking something obvious that would make the postage cost cheaper.
