I am really wanting to get a 2 plate bench in the next 12 months. What are the best progression options?
Post Body

Since I have been lifting I have tried all sorts of different progressions to get my bench press strength to increase. I tried 5x5 then 3x5 then 3x5 with last set AMRAP then Nsuns. I think Nsuns probably gave me the best results, but the volume was tough. I still never managed to get my bench higher than a 1RM of 82kg. I have been cutting for the last 5 months so just concentrating on keeping my strength at the same level during that period. I will be bulking again in a couple of weeks & really want to get a 2 plate bench within the next 12 months but I am stuck as to how to get there? I was thinking of continuing with the Reddit PPL but incorporating 5/3/1 BBB bench progression. So, I wonder if anyone could give me some advice on the following:

  • To get my bench up is the Reddit PPL not suitable with all the volume? I am led to believe that to get your compound lifts up it is better to drop as much isolation work as possible to keep you fresh for the main lifts. Would I be best dropping back to a 4 day a week routine?
  • Do I need to stay in the popular low rep range of 3 to 5 for strength?
  • I was thinking of doing standard double progression but in the 5 to 10 rep range as follows: 5 reps and 5 sets. The next time you work out do 6 reps for 5 sets and progress until you can hit 10 reps for 5 sets then add 10kg. I would be benching twice per week as per Reddit PPL. Could this work?
  • Is 5/3/1 a good option?

Also, I do make sure I am eating enough so thats never been a problem.

Thanks.
