Question on deadlifting grip. On palm or on fingers?

I'm trying to check my max deadlift and I know I can hit 295 pounds but my hands feel like they're getting torn so I bring the bar down before I hit the top.
My classmate told me that it didn't really matter, and to just use whichever you are more comfortable with but my old form, the one with bar on palm is tearing up my hands. I plan to buy straps for my deadlift reps soon.
