Pointers on starting to catch larger fish?

Post Body

Hi y'all! I hope this is okay to ask here. I'm still relatively new to fishing, but I love it, and I try to get out as much as possible during the week. I've gotten decent with my rod and spinner reel. I've been fishing mostly with worms, though I did catch a nice sized white sucker in the river on a jighead a while ago with a soft lure. I've otherwise mostly been catching various panfish (bluegill, redear, pumpkinseed) and while I'm happy to be catching anything at all, I think I'm ready to work towards reeling in bigger catches. I still have a LOT to learn about gear, and techniques. I mostly fish with worms at this point, because I know if nothing else, I'll at least be able to catch a little panfish on it (and my most notable fish I've caught on only a worm was a juvenile largemouth bass, and that was LITERALLY SO AWESOME!! I've also caught a warmouth on the worm too, but these are the rare exceptions because I'm otherwise only catching panfish), but I have a whole host of lures and tackle that I'm trying to figure out how to use. I'm really interested in catching more bass (or literally anything else-not that I hate panfish!! but it's less exciting when 8 out of 10 catches are palm sized bluegills, and the other 2 are redear or pumpkinseed, when I know there's all kinds of other fish where I'm at- like the lake I go to stocks trout all the time and it would be so fun to catch one!!) But can anyone give me some advice? I know if I want to catch other fish I'm going to have to start using my lures more. I'm still trying to figure out how techniques like trolling work (I'm not really sure how fast I should be reeling if that makes sense?), or other techniques to try. When I'm home from work I can tell you what kinds of lures and stuff I have, but off the top of my head I've got soft plastic worms (the big ones), as well as soft worms marketed specifically for bass fishing. I've got the soft grub ones with the tails, I have a couple frogs, and some soft little crayfishes. For hard lures I have a couple hard crickets(??), and a little spinning lure. I also am intending on getting a stronger rod and reel as soon as I can afford to, because I'm not sure my setup will be able to handle anything larger than the sucker I mentioned catching (it was a good few pounds, the friend I was with was surprised my rod didn't snap!). What techniques would y'all suggest for catching bass and trout? Do I even have the right stuff for them? What gear might you recommend? Any pointers will be helpful for me!! Sorry this post is so long, I wanted to be detailed as possible, and I hope the info is helpful.
