Ok so we just moved into this house and this is the fireplace. Told it is functional but never used one this old. Our fireplace at the last house was considerably more modern. This house was built in 1903. So this hole. Obviously goes in the chimney and down to the basement, how often should that be cleaned? What are the 2 arms I have circled in red? Should I cover that hole with a paver stone or something? Sorry if I look like a fool. I just never had one this old and would like to understand better. Thanks!
