I am a lieutenant on an engine company of 3 guys, the department is 140 strong. So I have one guy that got assigned to be when I got promoted. He and I got hired together over ten years ago. He still just doesn't "get it". Every day is like day one for him. It's been two years he's been my guy and I've tried every leadership tact I know. He absolutely breaks down if you yell or even just get on him. I'm generally a calm guy so I don't raise my voice anyway. I tried doing daily quizzes, answer three basic questions and you get to drive, hey one wrong and you clean the bathroom. I've tried the nice guy approach and used kids gloves with him. I made him the "driver", he never has to jump. I told him he had to learn the truck inside and out. Know every bit about the truck and pumping. He still didn't know how much supply line we have, how to estimate distance from a hydrant to a house, or as is this morning: how to turn on the scene lights! Anyone have this issue? Any suggestions?
