Newbie gameplay question here...

I can’t figure out if I’m wasting stride (gambit move) if I use it on a character that has already used their turn, but I’m wanting them to move further on their NEXT turn. Meaning, does it carry over to the next turn if used after the target characters have already acted?
Or is it just meant to be used at the very beginning of a player phase?
