Can I build my Byleth/Felix as both a Swordmaster/Assassin or Assassin/Swordmaster? What classes I go down and abilities do I need to do so?

Also, I hear Swordmaster strangely enough has higher crit/dodge and slightly higher base damage than Assassin from guides.
I'm assuming SM also has higher HP and DEF too
What are the benefits of the assassin class then?
It seems like Swordmaster completely overshadows assassin like Enlightened One outclasses Mortal Savant?
