I’m a 30 year old man for reference.
I’ve participated/lurked in groups like this for years (my account is new but I deleted reddit and came back after like a year) but I just received a job offer that literally doubled my salary overnight.
Prior to this I was making 50k a year after working for the same company in the same role for 7 years, although my role evolved greatly over time and I received numerous raises because of that. I started at 28k in 2017 right out of college.
I was promoted within the same department to a manager position. Between bonus salary it was 50k in my prior role and now I’ll be at 96k. I was in genuine shock when my boss presented the offer to me as I had no clue the amount would be that high, especially since I don’t have manager experience and I was a customer service rep prior to this. Its entry level management too so there’s lots of room for growth.
The raise takes affect immediately even though I’ll still be doing my normal job for the next couple weeks before transitioning.
I live in a LCOL area. Even at my low wages prior to this I was putting 14% in 401k 3% contribution from my employer in my 401k and about 1k/year in HSA. Theres a pension which I’m fully vested in too.
Housing prices went up here but you can still find plenty of 150-200k houses, which is what I’ll purchase to keep expenses low. It also helps that my wife makes 60k. My rent is only $450/month so I’ll finally be able to save aggressively. I was good at saving prior but you can only save so much at 50k/yr. Absolutely cannot WAIT to move out of my trash neighborhood (cheap rent is cheap for a reason) but staying a bit longer to save is also tempting.
I’m still in shock over it. My life changed for the better in a major way so quickly. My wife and I both come from lower class families and I don’t know a single person in either of our families that even make close to that amount.
My grandfather always worked for mediocre pay but managed to retire at 57. He was the epitome of FIRE before it was a thing and doing research was how I found this community. He’s the only one in my family that ever cared about investing/saving and thankfully it passed onto me. Feels unbelievable to finally have an income high enough to achieve early retirement.
