Is bill period forward or backwards?

I just got off the phone with Verizon and my urgency for changing services have increased. Here’s my question:
If I pay my recurring bill today is it to get services the next month (my impression) OR is it to pay for services the past month (what the Rep told me)?
If it helps, bill date is 4/15. Due date is 5/10. I guess per rep, the services are only good through 5/15 and if I want to change I better do it before then.
