Virtually no linux experience but would like a distro for reverse engineering firmware

While learning to reverse engineering various firmware on windows I found it to be a frustrating experience and from what little I've learned so far I feel like not having a linux distro in my toolbox for this is a mistake. I'm aware it will likely take me a long time to make any sort of progress but my thinking is learning will be probably help me later down the line. I have modest albeit a bit older hardware if that matters.
