Im 30 earning since 2 years I didn’t invest because i dont know how it works

I want someone to explain it like im 5. Everyone tells me in the long run its best to have investments in index funds.
How do i put invest in an index fund? Do i buy the individual stocks or are there companies, what are their names? How do i take money out? Lets say it grew by 10% can i just take the 10% out - if yes how?
Im sorry im asking such basic questions
(Live in UK have disposable income of ~£500 per week after paying off bills groceries essentials)
