Starting FFVII (with the intent to finish) for the first time. Probably not using a guide, but I hate missing things. Tips?

I'll be enjoying tasty craft beer while playing it on a ps2 in my living room. Super excited.
EDIT: Love it so far. It's a little bittersweet though, I flew through the first part, and right now I'm headed to Mythril Mines after Kalm. However, I hadn't saved since the Rufus encounter on floor 69, and got DESTROYED by the giant snake outside the cave. I was feeling pretty strong so I wasn't initially phased by having not saved. Now I'm a little sad.
