Why is the lightning rod calibration minigame in FFX-2 so INFURIATING? [Potential spoilers for first timers to X-2 like myself]

I'm literally on the last two rods. And Rikku's with the double button presses is driving me nuts. I get 25 or 26, and it all goes to crap. Presses stop registering, and I lose my rhythm and I wipe at the end. Uuuuggghhhh! Anyone have any tips to make this thing easier?
