People not playing the remakes of FF1... It confuses me...

I'm watching Ryu playing the Pixel remaster of FF1 and he keeps on calling some items by the NES terms.
He said that he hasn't played FF1 since it was on the NES.
I'm shocked that he didn't play the PS1, GBA, PSP. android versions of the games.
I don't quite understand that, how is that possible?
Did people not know about the PS1/GBA/PSP/Android remakes?
