Post Body

Greetings all. How do? This post may be a bit long so bear with and thanks in advance for reading if you read all of it. I'll start with a short intro.

My name is C. I live in NYC. I went to film school way back when. 12 years ago to be exact. So I do have some experience in all facets of production. Just as an FYI. That said...in the years that followed, not intentionally, I fell away from film/video production. I took up some odd PA gigs here and there but lost momentum for several reasons and here I am. All that said, this year I finally got back around to making my own content. I taught myself Premiere Pro this past summer and have started making videos again. Recently I made two music videos for a friend who is a musician. It's been very enjoyable to start making anything at all again.

Which brings me to the reason for my post. Given the present circumstances due to COVID I can only imagine how limited opportunities are going to be. That said, advice is still appreciated. As someone who is very much interested in getting into editing, professionally, what strategy would you suggest? I have several friends who became pro assistant editors and editors so I know that entry-level work starts at assistant editor it seems. What I want to know, given my sketchy resume (I did make a production resume)...what would anyone hiring look for exactly? What are the chances they'll be willing to give someone out of the loop a chance and what can I do to convince them they should? Is trying to work directly for an editing house the only way or would you suggest racking up some PA credits? How helpful is putting together a reel if you have no experience? A bit more background...way back when I did also learn Avid and Final Cut Pro. So I do have experience outside of Premiere Pro if this says anything.

Note I would be willing to go with a low-pay/no-pay/intern arrangement in the immediate future. Given my lack of experience I understand I may need to be ok with that. I hope I am asking the right questions and enough of them. If there is a question I didn't ask that you think needs to be answered, feel free to answer in advance. I would really appreciate as much advice as possible. This is something I'd very much like to pursue and think i'd do well at if given a chance and an idea of how to pursue. Also if there is a subreddit where you think this question also belongs or that you think is more appropriate please, feel free to suggest. Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

C.
