The concept of santelmo here in the Philippines is more similar to those of our neighboring countries such as the hitodama of Japan and the Naga lights of Thailand which appears as balls of fire that rise into the air, this phenomena is also called ball lightning.

Meanwhile, the St. Elmo's Fire that the Spaniards are more aware of is more of a maritime phenomena that appears on the masts of ships, which looks like lightning or similar.

Various sources also mention that it is known by many indigenous names but fail go to even give an example, the only one managed to find was the Ifugao fanfanilag.
