Travel question about Mamanuca Island chain...

Hello everyone, my wife and I are looking forward to visiting Fiji the first week of November. We are planning on traveling the Mamanuca Island chain, and are wondering if we will need to book places to stay as well as traveling by boat and water taxi in the area?
We are the type that like to play it by ear but also don't want to be stuck not getting somewhere we want to.
