How accurate do you guys think this is? Can a very hard fighting game have mainstream popularity?

Personally, I think leffen is being too optimistic here. It feels to me like the common denominator between all these more mainstream esports is that you have a team of 3-6 people you are playing with in them. Whether itā€™s being able to play with a group of friends or be able to blame teammates when you lose, these seem to attract more esports popularity. The only factor against this was StarCraft being the biggest esport in the 90s and 2000s I believe, and it seems possible that with the changing of the culture that 1v1 games like that just canā€™t thrive in the esports space anymore. What do you guys think? Is it another factor?

Iā€™d also be curious to hear takes on the ā€œmodern fighting games limitedā€ idea Leffen said in the reply as well.
