Going to have a haircut tomorrow, could use some advice

Hi guys I've been growing my hair for about 18 months it's now just past my shoulders. During this period I've never had a cut or trim. After some inspection I've found I have split ends, it's also generally messy and I would like to have it styled.
So in going to get it cut tomorrow, preferably I would like to lose as little length as possible. What should I ask for?
Also should I go to an barber or two a women's hairdresser?
