So I have had long hair for quite a time but I still don't know how to treat it properly. I have seen other guys with long and great hair and they look great, meanwhile my hair is always a mess. How often should I wash my hair? ( I have straight hair btw)

I am suppose to first apply shampoo before conditioner because if not, my hair would be very dry. I do that and still my hair gets dry. How should I apply shampoo and conditioner with my fingers?
