I really wanted to talk about a specific show, but didn't think the show's subreddit would be a great place. So I'm hoping others here can add to this with their own thoughts and/or other shows they find enjoyable yet questionable.
I've been rewatching Chuck, because I really loved the music on that show and a song I heard the other day gave me nostalgic pangs. The show holds up fairly well comedically, but there have been many decisions made by the creators that have just rubbed me the wrong way.
Soooo many shots of sexy women in their underwear strapping weapons to themselves. I did enjoy them because Dear God Yvonne Strahovski is unbearably gorgeous, but seeing so very many did bother me.
Lots of low-key sexist stuff (jokes, character decisions, character motivations...)
Repeated anti-communist pro-capitalist America best "FREEDOM" narrative
That last one has really been bothering me. It's just such an American propaganda point. I used to read a lot of spy/war novels back in the day (Alistair MacLean, Desmond Bagley, Jack Higgins, Helen MacInnes, John le Carré...) and the American author seemed to display less cynicism towards the system and feel less empathy for their enemies' values than the British authors did. (To be fair, that was one author.)
I dunno, maybe watching this after having lived in the US for a while has made me more sensitive to this kind of rhetoric. What are your thoughts?
