Sloppy Feminism
Post Body

I am a male college student at a liberal university. I have always been very left wing and anti-authoritarian (I am now an Anarchist) but I must admit I have only recently really developed much of an understanding of gender issues facing women. The feminists on my campus advocate for a list of what I can only describe as "rules" concerning how men and women are too interact. The one I want to talk about is the idea that drunk women can't give consent and that drunk sex is therefore rape. No one ever answers the question if drunk men also cannot give consent, and i hate asking that question because it makes me sound like an MRA. I cant help but feel that the "no drunk sex" rule is sloppy, its a haphazard brute force attempt to deal with the symptoms of patriarchy not the underlying problem. My girlfriend is one of the most articulate feminists I have ever met but we have sex while high and or drunk all the time. Its obviously untrue that you cant give consent while drunk. The problem isnt drunk sex itself its that someone who is drunk is in a vulnerable condition where they are less cpable of defending against direct sexual coercion and even if they didnt say "no" or said "yes" they still may have been pressured into it against their true desires by someone taking advantage of their inebriated condition.

All of these rules to me seem to exist because men are not trusted to respect women's boundaries. I feel like the only real rule needed is to treet women as people and respect their boundaries. No type or style of sex/forplay is inherently non consensual. If a boundry is oversteped its also not a problem if it was a genuine mistake, a missreading of the situation, and the person who has overstepped their sexual partners boundary immediately retracts and apologizes. These black and white one size fits all rules about sex are easy for anti feminists to make fun of because sex is highly personal and improvisational. Again I feel like the it might be more productive for feminists to focus strictly on the fact that society gives more power to men then women in allot of domains including sexual relationships rather then trying to police what types of sex are ok. Because realy isnt any type of sex ok so long as both people respect each others boundaries and treat each other as equals.
