The first few shots of the past week were full colour shots. Everything is highly vivid. We can clearly see every CMYK balance in each shot.
As the shot goes on, we notice more and more muted colours. From the perspective of Mr. Wrench, for example, we see yellow. As he becomes more agressive, and more protective, we see more colours there.
But then, there's a break.
As soon as Nikki opens the back door to the bus, the colors become heavily muted. They step out in greyscale, and the only colour comes from the lights of the bus. As the three antagonists step out, the only colored light is the dying yellowed lights of the bus.
The next burst of colour comes from the unfortunate passers-by. Only their faces are illuminated. Everything else is greyscale.
When Nikki and Wrench escape, everything is greyscale. The colours slowly come back, with each terrible realization, that it really isn't going to be okay. And, after all, that's the spirit of Fargo, right?
To be honest, I can't outline the entire episode here, because his use of colour and shots are masterful. It's something that actually takes a film theorist to complete.
This is my amateurish take on the first 11 minutes. Hawley is a script genius. I honestly don't know what he has planned.
