Attempted several maps none to my satisfaction. Tried using a variety of polyhedral dice, and wasn’t a huge fan. Looking to use this map in world building for both writing and possibly D&D. Does anyone have any tips? Edit: additional question. Fantasy maps typically are a blend of iso/top views are there good ways to tell what to use iso for vs top down?
Edit thanks to helpful community member: Shuggaloaf
More specifically into what I am looking for. I want to make a classic fantasy map sort of a blend of Middle earth, Skyrim, and Forgotten Realms.
What I’ve tried with dice was the first time around I took all my D4s (35-40: I’m aware it’s a problem) and rolled them out on to paper just letting the naturally fall where they would. This was fine to a degree but after having lightly drawn around them to make the landmass borders, isles, and islands. It didn’t look like a naturally occurring land mass.
So I started over this time adding just 20 or so D6 to add some volume, and I had someone else roll it telling them as little as possible. This time it felt closer I realized the other individual was the key to the sort of naturally occurring issues.
So third round I added 20 or so D20s, it’s a large notebook traced it all out. It still felt wrong as the person used assumed I wanted the notebook just covered and started sluicing for a lack of a better term and I had them do it again trying to recreate the magic of that first time but it seems to have passed.
I then read online about using noodles or rice, but before proceeding with those I thought it was time to consult someone nerdy/ knowledgeable.
