WWE WrestleMania 32 - AT&T Stadium - April 3rd, 2016
AJ Styles vs Chris Jericho
This past January saw AJ Styles make his presence known in WWE, debuting in one of the most coveted matches in the industry's history, the Royal Rumble Match. Entering at the unfortunate entry of #3, a valiant performance by "The Phenomenal One" was seen, but his early dream of headlining WrestleMania in Dallas came to a crashing halt, specifically when being thrown over the top by none other than Chris Jericho. Not letting this single loss define him, he proceeded to walk into Monday Night RAW the following night, quickly being greeted by the General Manager, Stephanie McMahon. She congratulates him on making it to the big leagues at last, but states that this isn't the indies any longer, and it only grows more difficult from now on. And that challenging task begins tonight, as he will have a chance to prove his worth, as he partakes in a IC title qualifier clash against Sheamus later in the night. Once the time had arrived, Styles used his unmatched technical ability, to match Sheamus' ruthless aggression to make for quite the affair, which ultimately led the former to a successful debut after a emphatic Styles Clash.
While Styles continued to showcase his undeniable talent to the world, putting away opponent-after-opponent in the passing weeks. But on the other hand, there was still a vacancy left to be filled in the eventual IC title clash, and there was one individual that sought out to make this open spot his, that man being Chris Jericho! Just a couple of weeks after Styles' RAW debut victory, Jericho is seen storming into Stephanie McMahon's office. He proceeds to demand an opportunity to make history, to become a 10x Intercontinental Champion, much like he has done his entire career, he wants to continue on making history. In-which she nonchalantly agrees, stating that Jericho will have a chance to join the IC title clash, all he has to do is repeat Styles' actions from two weeks ago, and win his qualifier matchup, where he goes one-on-one with with a familiar opponent, Dolph Ziggler. The following week approaches, as a multi-year feud finally culminates, both men put on a highly competitive matchup, where multiple years of hatred fuels them. This causes Jericho to unusually think outside the box, scoring the victory in the process!
Over the next month or so, the stars begin to align for the eventual Fastlane IC title clash. Since winning the strap for the first time back at the Royal Rumble event, Ryback has been showcasing his absolute dominance to anyone that dares to step up to him. That being the case until now, with both of his challengers being known as some of the best across the world, fear begins to appear on the champion's face as the weeks pass by, and the looming PPV event continues to grow closer. Most notably on the Fastlane go-home show, all three are seen in the ring for a traditional contract signing, while it starts off as a polite signing between the three gentlemen, it quickly bursts into an all-out war! All chasing identical championship gold, the drive to claim what they desire is shown here, as both Styles and Jericho take out the big man, leaving the two to stare daggers at one another. One last solid image before this Sunday, they take a final look at what their aiming to achieve, as it's now officially anyone's game at Fastlane.
Come the Fastlane PPV, all three competitors engage in a heated championship battle. While it's clear they aren't very fond of eachother, one similar prize keeps them in toe, and that is the Intercontinental Championship! All three men give it their all on this night, all trying to walk out as the better man. However, a theme seemed to be emerging, as both Styles and Jericho were too focused on eachother, that Ryback was able to take advantage of this situation, and retaining his prize in the process! Moments after the matchup, a disappointed Jericho looked to help a fallen Styles, lifting him up to his feet, HE SUCKERS HIM INTO A CODEBREAKER! Clearly now having a vendetta on the newest signee to the company, he stands over a fallen victim, sending a message to him aswell. With the fallout of Fastlane now upon us, Jericho storms down the entrance ramp the following night, as he has a hold of one of Styles' gloves. Wearing his newest souvenir, he begins to state that Styles is naive, he doesn't deserve the opportunities that he's been given thus far. While he may have been a big fish in a small pond, he is now a tiny fish filled with Great White Sharks. And at Wrestlemania he will send Styles right back to where he belongs... IRRELEVANCY!
Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal
An annual WrestleMania festivity returns this year, as the third Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal will take place at this year's show of shows! This matchup has been known to give a chance to the superstars who have unfortunately fallen in the shadows, hopefully leading them shine in the spotlight, and to move up the card in the process. This is an opportunity to be compared to an absolute legend, and with names such as Cesaro and The Big Show already accomplishing this major feat, it leaves the million dollar question left to be asked, who will be this year's winner? While many of WWE's own desire to have their own WrestleMania moment, more likely than not, it isn't meant to be. But for 30 superstars from Raw/SmackDown/NXT, they will have a shot to answer the aforementioned question for themselves, as a third winner of this annual battle royal will be revealed in Dallas.
United States Championship
Kalisto (c) vs Luke Harper
With about a month back on top, WWE Fastlane saw Kalisto keep a tight grip on the US Championship, with a successful retention over one Alberto Del Rio. With his confidence booming by each passing day, he issues an open challenge to any individual in the back, but instead of getting a lively competitor, he finds a twisted Luke Harper in the wake! Right from behind, the former IC Champion strikes, LANDING A REVERSE DISCUS LARIAT! Looking slightly down to the canvas, he begins to glance at the belt laying on the ground, proceeding to pick it up and lift it high up above his shoulders, his intentions are no crystal clear. The following week, Harper cuts a eerie promo from an unknown location, as he states that for well over a year now, he has been stuck in the shadows, and was left in the darkness by his so-called family for far too long. Now instead of continuing to stay put, he is coming to collect the US title, and position himself above the rest.
Returning from a heinous attack the following week, Kalisto is seen marching through the backstage hallways, before being stopped by one Tom Phillips. He begins to question the US Champion on how he's feeling after last week's events, and what his Road To WrestleMania is looking like. He responds by stating that while he is still in immense pain following Harper's attack, he can't stay stuck on the past for too long, and instead will look towards the future. Harper made his intentions quite clear, and if it's a fight he desires, than it's a fight he will get. Over the next month or so, Harper continued to showcase his utter dominance, putting opponent-after-opponent on the shelf, making sure to send a message to the champion each time he would do so. Eventually on the WrestleMania go-home show, Harper is laying victim to yet another useless soul, until Kalisto has finally had enough, he proceeds to storm to the ring and takes out his challenger! Using his unmatched agility to his advantage, he takes down Harper for the first time in weeks, sending him crashing down onto the canvas with a SALIDA DEL SOL! Possibly the future being showcased 6 days before WrestleMania!
Sami Zayn vs Kevin Owens
Over a decade of friendship between these two, ultimately led to a betrayal of a lifetime. With years of animosity finally pushed aside, Kevin Owens looked to embark on a solo journey, attempting to accomplish his lifelong dream of main-eventing WrestleMania. However, his past came back to haunt him one last time, as Sami Zayn shared a similar dream as his music struck, proceeding to engage in a fiery battle with his former best friend! A moment of realization appeared on Owens' face, as the utter shock of his most prominent rival reappearing on the main roster, would in time fall to his demise when Zayn eliminated Owens to the shock of many! The shock factor carried to the following night, as Canada's own is already seen in the ring, with a microphone by his side, preparing to speak on his recent return. He starts off by stating that spending months away from the ring has been incredibly challenging, but one simple thing kept him in high spirits - getting his revenge! Ever since falling twice to Owens back in NXT, he has fought tooth-and-nail to return the favor, and now he finally has the chance to do so, and last night was just the first step in many things to come.
The following week, saw Owens take a similar action, pacing back-and-forth in the backstage area, his emotions clearly showing that he's livid due to the events transpiring these past two weeks. He begins to speak about how Zayn must be a complete idiot, while he has returned to a new environment, this is his home, where he has been striving for the past 11 months. And that he must remember what happened last year, that being laying waste to him not once, but twice, and he wouldn't mind making it a third time. With both men having their thoughts out in the open, Sami is seen outside of Stephanie McMahon's office, knocking on the door relentlessly until it's eventually opened, in-which she allows him to make his way inside. Once they are both face-to-face, Zayn begins to demand a match with Owens, expressing the fact that he was waited almost an entire calendar year for this opportunity, and he won't want another single second for the chance to seek his revenge. She reluctantly agrees, knowing full well what has occurred in the past, but he will have to earn it, by defeating "The Celtic Warrior", Sheamus.
Come the Fastlane PPV, Sami Zayn is given a chance to earn his chance at vengeance, but he will have to get past League Of Nations member, Sheamus. The underground nature of Zayn would blossom throughout the duration of this contest, and while his opposition gave him one tough challenge, he was able to overcame the adversary and earn a shot a one-on-one contest against Kevin Owens at Wrestlemania, issued with a nasty Helluva Kick! With their Road To Wrestlemania officially set in stone, they would spend the next few weeks discussing the history with one another, and how it led them to this very moment, sharing a ring with one another at the Grand Daddy Of Them All! Ultimately on the WrestleMania go-home show, a fight would break out between the two in the backstage area, the hatred between both men is highly evident, as they wouldn't let go one of another. This being until half a dozen security guards intervened in the matter, barely separating them a matter of days before their biggest match of their individual careers.
WWE Tag Team Championships
The New Day (c) vs The Brass Ring Club
For the past 202 days, The New Day has ruled the tag team division, with their reign of terror having no sign of coming to a stop anytime soon. Their most recent challenge was met with a Roadblock, as King Barrett & Sheamus of The League Of Nations tested their abilities, attempting to do what no other team was able to do before, and that is dethroning the champions. However, unfortunately for the challengers on this night, they received the same fate as the rest of the competition, that being falling at the feet of their opposition, as The New Day would continue their record-breaking reign.
With their confidence now at an all-time high, the real work is only officially beginning, and with Wrestlemania only now a few weeks away, they will need challengers to spark things up, which is exactly what they were searching for on the post-Roadblock episode of RAW. They wouldn't have to wait long for an answer, as numerous teams were set to make their cases known, as The Usos bring up the fact that they have yet to have a crack at The New Day since capturing the belts at Summerslam last year, but they truly believe that they are currently one of the best tag teams in the world, and it's about time they prove that. The Brass Ring Club wants to bring prestige back to the tag team gold, and knowing how it feels to hold the rich prize in the past, they would like the opportunity to represent the division once again. And last but certainly not least, it's The Dudley Boyz, as the veterans would like to hold the titles for a 10th time, with being veterans of the game for much longer than the rest of the competition, they want another chance to prove that they still have the ability to perform at a top-tier level. Soon after, it's announced that a 3-Way #1 Contender’s match will take place next week!
The following week, the aforementioned contest closes the night, as all three teams give it their absolute all, hoping to pave their Road To Wrestlemania. While they all showcased various traits to use to their advantage, it was Cesaro who ended up scoring the victory for his team, earning a championship match in Dallas! With a week elapsing since their challengers were revealed in the open, The New Day are seen in the backstage area, soaking in their utter confidence with drinks, balloons, and other festivities, as it's clear they don't find their opposition a true threat, which they would eventually state that for over 200 days they have been on the top of their game, that their hasn't been anyone better than them in that time, and that won't change come WrestleMania. Moving on from a week filled with party-like merriment, a serious tone is the theme for the following week, as the challengers speak on the fact that they are better than ever, being former champions themselves, the champions should be worried, their world will soon be crashing around them, as a stone-cold message has been sent to the champions ahead of the big night.
Roman Reigns vs John Cena
Since his crushing defeat last October, there hasn't been any sight from John Cena, that being until this moment... After being unable to capture a back-to-back Royal Rumble victory, he stormed out to the ring the following night, and with a microphone by his side already, he would begin to speak his mind. He began by stating that while last night may have not been what he imagined, he isn't going to let this singular loss hold him back from securing his WrestleMania moment, especially since last year his moment was taken right from under him. He proceeds to issue a challenge to anyone in the back that wants a crack at him, but to the surprise of many across the world, it's John Cena who answers the aforementioned challenge! The well-known veteran talks about how he has waited ages for this moment, that he has heard so much about the man directly across from him, and wanting to make an impactful message almost immediately upon his return, he challenges Reigns to a match at WrestleMania in a little over two months! Instead of answering the challenge, Roman simply shakes his head, brushing Cena's shoulder in the process, as he exits the ring without an answer.
With a week passing since Cena's star-studded return, there is many questions left to be answered, as the answers can only be answered by one man. Speaking of him, Reigns takes part in a one-on-one exclusive interview alongside Micheal Cole, as he's quickly questioned about the WrestleMania challenge and his reluctance to answer it on the spot. In-which he replies by stating that while Cena has been away for the past couple of months, he has been carrying the company on his back, while has immense pride for his work, Cena only decides to show up when it's convenient for him. So with the ball in his court this time, he's going to let him wait, and answer the challenge when he pleases. The following week, John Cena is seen marching around the backstage area, until reaching his destination, which is the Men's Locker-Room. Upon entering it, he witnesses multiple superstars sitting down throughout the entirety of the room, not a single one of them expressing happiness or joy, but instead misery or depression. Which Cena eventually calls them out on, stating that before he left these same faces were fighting to have a say, to have an opportunity, but now they have all given up, with the sole reason being Roman Reigns. He has decided to run the show, to call the shots, and to take all the opportunities, he promises that once they share a ring, this will no longer be a formality.
Following last week's events, it's announced that both Reigns & Cena will have a face-to-face confrontation come Fastlane, with both competitors able to air their grievances finally. Come the annual PPV, Cena lets the world know what he truly thinks of his WrestleMania opposition, as he states that the only reason he's back, is because Roman couldn't do his job correctly, that for nearly four years now, he hasn't been able to do it correctly, and at WrestleMania he will make sure Roman learns his place. Reigns replies by stating that Cena doesn't know what he's talking about, that for the past two years he has been the pinnacle of this company, and at WrestleMania he will take on Cena, and finally prove what he has been saying all along, Cena's inavaibilty to be the workhorse anymore will lead to his demise.
WWE Divas Championship
Charlotte Flair (c) vs Sasha Banks vs Becky Lynch
Triple Threat Match
After successfully defending her championship once more at Fastlane, it seems as there is no-one left to challenge her ahead of WrestleMania, that being until Becky Lynch made her presence known just moments later. She stated that while she can admit she failed at the Royal Rumble, it wasn't without clear controversy, if it wasn't for Ric Flair, she would most likely have the Divas Title around her waist at the moment. And she believes that she deserves a fair-and-square rematch at this year's Wrestlemania, so that there is no excuses left to be dished out. However, before the champion can even respond to the challenge, another woman intervenes into the title scene, as to the surprise of both women, Sasha Banks's theme hits for the first time since late last year. She talks about how she also desires a title match at WrestleMania, and unlike Lynch, she hasn't gotten a crack at that title Flair holds so proudly. However, instead of giving a direct answer to both of her possible challengers, Flair simply walks out of the ring, shaking her head in disgust, with no answer given just yet.
The following night, an answer seems plausible, as Flair is already in the ring with a microphone by her side. She begins to state that last night was completely unnecessary, she should have lines-upon-lines of challengers awaiting her at WrestleMania, but instead she finds herself with two woman that deserve absolutely nothing. We have one who she defeated just last month, and another who decides to show up after a month of missed action, just expecting a free title shot, well it doesn't work that way. However, she does admit that she is a fighting champion, and if it's a title match they want, than that's what they'll get, because next week both Banks & Lynch will battle it out in a #1 Contendership matchup, she wishes them both the best of luck. The following week sees both woman give it their all, hoping to earn a title opportunity at WrestleMania, but unfortunately for them it would seem as neither would earn that chance, as Flair attacked both of her possible challengers, resulting in an unfortunate no-contest ruling.
The next week sees Flair parade around the backstage area, snickering at the other women around her, celebrating that she has the night off at WrestleMania, in-which Stephanie McMahon approaches her, stating that this is not factual, because on April 3rd she will defend her title. But it won't be against one woman, but rather two, as she will defend against both Sasha Banks & Becky Lynch, and the winner of that contest will be the inagural WWE Women's Champion!
Seth Rollins (c) vs HHH
WWE Championship
Since last year's WrestleMania, there has been no-one quite like Seth Rollins, especially with holding the richest prize in the industry for over a year now. However, it only takes one step back for one man's world to come crumbling down, which is what the world saw when HHH betrayed his long-time ally, sending him into a cold world of despair. When confronted about his actions, the CEO simply stated that it was time to pick-and-choose, to think of what was of higher importance, his lackey of two years or precious gold. Clearly he picked the latter, continuing to state that he used Rollins, and waited patiently for the perfect time to strike, and take back what he so kindly gave to him.
Over the course of the next month, the two trade words back-and-forth, with the champion stating he's simply forgot who he was for the better part of two years, and he clearly had lost sight of that. He lost friends, family, and so much more all for a climb up the mountain, but come WrestleMania he returns to his origins and sets fire to his dark past. On the WrestleMania go-home show, a brawl breaks out between the two, which ultimately leads to the Police getting involved, the two get sent away all bloody and bruised, still shouting at one another.
