This question comes from having recently read John A. Lynn's Women, Armies, and Warfare in Early Modern Europe and reflecting on the fact that I don't think I've read any fantasy where the women and non-combatant boys/men of an army have more than a token presence. Instead of being vital to logistics, siege works and even defence on occasion, they mostly seem to be relegated to prostitutes, washerwomen and noblewomen when they feature at all.
Does anyone know of any books or series where
A) At least a third of the book is dedicated solely to camp followers and their role in the army and
B) The women aren't "just" prostitutes, but occupy a wide variety of roles.
Bonus points if the camp followers don't have a single defined role but chop and change as the need arises and circumstances change.
