Hey everyone! Just looking for some recommendations on what to read next based on series I've read and liked. I generally prefer series over single books (the longer the better!) but I'm still very open to standalones. In no particular order here's how I rate some series I've read:
-SPOILERS-
Game of thrones - 8
Really enjoyed it but it was a little dense at times. I saw the show first which may have tempered my enjoyment. Loved the grittiness and tone of the world. The characters felt well thought out and I always love multiple perspectives.
Wheel of time - 7
Loved the world and some of the magic scenes (particularly the bubbles of evil). I also really loved dumais wells and Rands battle with insanity. I have all the usual gripes such as annoying characters and Robert Jordans perspective on women feeling a bit dated.
Stormlight Archives - 9.5
I am an absolute sucker for Brandersons magic systems, I fall in love with his characters and I love how fresh this world feels. Taravangian is one of my favourite characters in any book ever.
Mistborn - 8
I only really give the first book an 8, the second and third were probably a 7. I absolutely loved the idea of throwing over the empire in the format of a heist. Kelsiers death shook me and cut deep in the best sort of way. I liked vins character progression over the trilogy.
Discworld - between 6.5 and 8.5
Haven't read all these but a couple of my favourites have been nightwatch (for the great story) and the weefree men (for how much it made me laugh). Pratchett writes some of the best sentences I've seen on paper. I intend to read more of these but I find I get a bit sick of them after a couple in a row.
Riftwar cycle - 8.5
Serpentwar saga is probably my favourite but I loved them all - even the ones with bad reviews. Two things that draw me to feist are the lovable characters and the continuously expanding universe. Other things I really liked were the epic scale magic, the valheru and the hall of the world's. I loved the format of generation passing between series while some long lived characters hung around.
Harry Potter - 5.5
There were elements I liked, and they definitely get better in the later books but its just not quite my steeze. I've been to school enough for a lifetime and I much prefer the medieval setting commonly used in fantasy. I still enjoyed them but I wouldn't read them again.
Lord of the Rings - 10
Tolkein is king. In my opinion no one has created a world with such depth and rich history. I read this for the first time when I was about 10 and I've read it countless times over the years. I'm willing to admit that some of my love for it is nostalgia but there's no doubt it deserves it's popularity. I've tried to read some other Tolkein but they were short stories and I found them to be a bit dense. If anyone has some tips for some approachable other Tolkein books I'm all ears (Have read and loved the Hobbit)
Kingkiller chronicles - 8
Can't actually remember these too well but I know I loved them. From memory what really drew me in was the storytelling.
Axis trilogy - 6
Another I don't remember very clearly but I remember feeling like I should be enjoying them more. Had some good ideas but it just fell a bit flat. I suspect it may have been poor writing but I could be way off here.
Some stand alone books I've really enjoyed are winter warriors by David Gemmel and Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson.
As you can probably tell from my ratings, I enjoy most fantasy, but based of this is there anything that's sticking out as a must read for someone with my tastes? Thanks in advance!
Edit: You guys have given me so many damn books to read. I love this sub you're a pack of legends!
