Looking for unlikely protagonists (Senlin Ascends)

Am in the middle of reading Senlin Ascends, which is great, and I found the protagonist really interesting. A shy, bookish school teacher thrust into an adventure when his wife goes missing.
Are there any other good books with main characters that feel different to what you usually see in fantasy? Doesn't necessarily have to be the same as Senlin.
