Prelude; Hi, semi-new poster long time lurker here, and I'm a big Donaldson fan, specifically of the Thomas Covenant Series. I'm youngish (in my mid 20's) and I pretty much learned to read on The Hobbit, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Wizard of Oz series.
I am currently a pretty big fantasy reader; mostly older books but a lot of newer ones as well. In truth I try and sample a lot of the greats from every decade, but I cant stop coming back to The Chronicles of Thomas it just hits all the right notes for me ever time I read it. The evocative prose, the powerful pacing, and excellent character development never get old to me. But thats not exactly what I wanted to talk about today (that shouldn't stop you though).
Most, if not all, the Donaldson fans I meet now days are in the older generation, the youngest was X, and I don't often see a lot of love for him on this subreddit either, so why haven't a lot of younger fantasy fans gravitated towards him; or am I just not running into any?
My other question for Donaldson fans, and the reason for the title is why is The One Tree often rated low in the series? I consider it one of the better books, its well paced, has a lot of action, and you get to see more of the land than in previous volumes. I also considered Linden a great foil for the typical 80's Heroine and the book in general one of the best examples of that decades fantasy fiction; and I have read and loved a lot of the best such as The Black Company and The Book of the New Sun.
So what do you think about Donaldson and why he doesn't rate hight on the polls, are all the older redditers voting for LOTR or Moorcock? Feel free to discuss any thing on topic. Recommendations welcome.
